James Corden is responding to backlash surrounding one of his show's popular segments, which has been accused of mocking Asian foods."The Late Late Show" host confirmed he will be adjusting the "Spill Your Guts" segment— in which celebrities are forced to choose between answering a tough question and eating something "unusual"— following a Change.org petition calling to remove the bit.“The foods that are presented are meant to be ‘gross,’ as they are supposed to encourage the guest to answer his questions instead. However, many of the foods that he presents to his guests are actually from different Asian cultures," Saira wrote in the description of the petition. In response to the controversy, Corden said he wouldn't completely remove the segment, but rather update the foods used.”The next time we do that bit we absolutely won’t involve or use any of those foods," Corden said while speaking to Howard Stern on June 16. “Our show is a show about joy and light and love – we don’t want to make a show to upset anybody."USA TODAY reached out to Corden's reps for comment. When asked if he believed the criticism was too harsh, Corden said it wasn't his place to decide what's offensive and what isn't."It's not for us to determine whether somebody is upset or hurt about something. That's not for us to decide. All we can do is go, 'Alright, we get it, we hear you, we won't do that.' "On Friday, Saira reacted to Corden's response, calling it a "non-apology.""I feel like there is no accountability on his end,” she told KCRW. “I think that the line was really drawn when he decided to mock foods that are used in predominantly Asian cultures. There are ways to go about comedy that doesn’t offend or is culturally insensitive.”In a viral TikTok video earlier this month, Saira labeled the segment as "racist" and started a petition calling on the host to remove this part of his show as it includes some Asian delicacies portrayed in a negative light. The video also featured a clip from "The Late Late Show," in which Corden and fellow TV personality Jimmy Kimmel expressed disgust at several common Asian foods."Wow, it all looks so terrible," Kimmel said in the clip. "It's really disgusting. It's horrific," Corden responded. The original TikTok had 2.8 million views as of Monday.
