Wow this was a challenging edit, but I think it turned out ok. This song was a hidden gem but a huge hit from 1983 that I all but forgot about, until I started to reminisce about the songs that I danced to in the clubs in that seminal year after I left home and began having a life in the big wide world. Freeez was a British act, but 'I.O.U' was penned and produced by Americans Arthur Baker and John 'Jellybean' Benitez, two of the most prolific and successful creatives of the era. 'I.O.U' was issued in the first half of 1983 and entered the British chart in June; making it all the way to #2. Here in Australia it performed nearly as well; peaking at #3 and spending 6 months in the Top 100 well into 1984. It was a massive dance floor filler and it thankfully brings back better memories for me than Michael Sembello's 'Maniac' which was on the scene at the same time. The falsetto and the catchy lyric together made for a really vibey track, and the production was cutting edge and a portent of what was to come in both synth pop as well as high NRG - mainstays of the 1980's. I have re-edited the promotional clip to accommodate the extended remix. The reason it was tough, was that there was at least one verse not in the single mix, and turning a near 4 minute gem into a near 8 minute behemoth was no easy task, but I do enjoy a challenge. I hope it gets widely seen and enjoyed.
