The average homeowner will reroof their homes three times in their lifetime. Not only is putting in a new roof expensive.. but the National Association of Homebuilders says more than one point three billion pounds of roofing waste ends up in landfills each year. The alternative to asphalt or tile is a metal roof. More and more homeowners are discovering that choosing a metal roof offers an aesthetically appealing, environmentally friendly option. Why you should consider a metal roof: 1) metal roofs are more durable than asphalt and have a very long life expectancy, they will often last as long as the structure they’re covering without having to be replaced. Many manufacturers offer up to 50 year transferable warranties for their products. 2) Little or no maintenance is required for metal roofing systems. 3) Hidden fasteners: the metal roof is held onto the structure using hidden fasteners. Basically, clips are screwed into the joists or decking and then the metal roof is clipped into place. Since there is no penetration of the metal by screws there is virtually no chance for a leak plus there’s no chance of corrosion because the metal has not been compromised. Metal roofs are more durable also because they resist water which causes cracking shrinking and eroding. Metal roofs are also great because they can handle heavy snow loads (because they weigh less than 50 percent of an asphalt roof and 75 percent less than a concrete tile roof) and they prevent water damming under eaves where snow or ice can melt and run back into your house causing all kinds of water damage. And metal roofs can withstand hail storms. Some metal roofing materials have recently been given a class 4 rating for hail damage. What’s great about this rating is that a consumer putting this type of metal roof on a home in a hail damage zone like north Texas or on up into the midwest can receive up to 35% off their insurance premiums with this type of roof that is so resistant to hail damage. New designs in metal roofs offer literally dozens of styles and color to offer consumers the look they want for their homes. This includes metal that looks like shake, slate, asphalt shingles and tile. Metal roofs are environmentally friendly because they can reflect sunlight back off the roof and reduce energy costs. Also they are environmentally friendly because they can be installed over existing asphalt roofs, thus eliminating the need to take off the material and send it to a landfill. Metal roofs cost three to four times what an asphalt shingled roof does, but since it almost never has to be replaced.. it pays for itself over time. Depending on the curb appeal and look you want for your house, metal roofing might be the right choice for you.
